More shoes drop in court corruption cases

Kim Hong-su, a 58-year-old carpet importer, is serving 18 months in prison after being convicted of bribery in December last year. Prosecutors widened their investigation last month after they obtained testimony from Mr. Kim that he had acted as a broker, receiving money from criminal and civil defendants to bribe at least four judges, two prosecutors, two lawyers and four police officials.  The prosecutors said last month that one of the suspected judges was a member of Seoul's High Court...According to prosecutors, the High Court justice intervened in at least five cases in return for about 100 million won ($103,885) from 2004 to 2006. He was not the judge in any of those cases, the prosecution said, but he used his influence to intervene. The prosecution said the High Court judge tried to cover up his alleged crimes last month by paying Mr. Kim's close aide 20 million won.
